Respect Life means to recognize every human person as a special creation of God, made in His image, and to value every human life from the moment of conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every circumstance.
RESPECT LIFE PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
The Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish Respect Life Ministry collaborates with and supports the efforts of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. At the local, state and national level, the parish is committed to defending and protecting the sanctity of all human life from conception to natural death. Through prayer and encouragement, parishioners are provided information and opportunities to actively support critical life issues.
RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE
The Respect Life Committee is dedicated to the truth that life is a gift from God, beginning at conception and ending at natural death. We commit ourselves to help all innocent human life by making abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, and destruction of human embryos socially, ethically, and legally unacceptable.
We educate our fellow parishioners through the Church’s Bulletin/Flocknote/Facebook communications about the evil of abortion. We also promote positive Christian alternatives to the evils of threatening all human life. Additionally, we encourage interaction with our federal and state legislators to bring about public recognition of the value of innocent human life.
The committee meets five times a year generally on the first Friday of the month at 1:00 PM for an hour. The 2024-2025 year runs from September through May (September, November, January, March, and May). Current members include: Patty Bosse, Ken Crabbe, Maria Johnson, and Joe Wolf. RESPECT LIFE NEWS Maryland Right to Reproductive Freedom Constitutional Amendment November 2024Abortion Ballot Proposal
What is the Maryland Abortion Ballot Proposal? The Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment is a ballot proposal to enshrine abortion in the Maryland constitution. It will be on the ballot as a constitutional amendment in November 2024.
Would Abortion be Legal in Maryland Without a Constitutional Amendment? Yes, since Maryland is one of the most progressive states when it comes to abortion access. Maryland has very few safeguards when it comes to abortion. Currently, minors are not required to obtain parental consent to have an abortion in Maryland if the person performing the abortion decides that the minor has the maturity to make an abortion decision.
Why is a Constitutional Abortion Amendment Alarming for Maryland? A Maryland constitutional abortion amendment will deter resources and support services for pregnant women and mothers that currently promote women’s well-being. It is essential that there is a continued culture of empathy and solidarity whereas women feel supported and respected for choosing life.
Would a Maryland Constitutional Abortion Amendment Affect Legislative Flexibility and Legal Protection for Healthcare Providers? A Maryland constitutional abortion amendment would limit the ability of lawmakers to remain flexible in creating laws that best serve the needs and interests of all Maryland women. The constitutional abortion amendment could have legal consequences in existing protections for religious freedom, and the right of healthcare providers to practice according to beliefs.
Why aMaryland Constitutional Abortion Amendment Rather than Current Statutes? A Maryland constitutional abortion amendment would be considered a supreme law of the state and could only be altered or repealed through another constitutional abortion amendment process. Current Maryland abortion statutes are more flexible and adaptable compared to a constitutional abortion amendment. Statutes generally can be amended, repealed, or replaced by the legislature and approved by the government to become law.
As Catholics, we believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and all life should be protected and respected from conception to natural death. According to the Maryland Catholic Conference, “There is no need for a Constitutional amendment; unfortunately, Maryland currently has one of the highest rates of abortion in the country and Maryland is already a destination in the abortion travel industry….Maryland taxpayers already pay millions in taxes that go to providing abortions for others. This bill will help only increase these trends.”
Pope Francis reminds us that: “Human life must always be defended from its beginning in the womb and must be recognized as a gift of God that guarantees the future of humanity.” – Pope Francis, Letter to Brazilian families for National Family Week, August 6, 2013
RESPECT LIFE QUOTES “Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, and then just after birth, experienced the world’s rejection. And every elderly person… even if he is ill or at the end of his days, bears the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded, as the ‘culture of waste’ suggests!” – Pope Francis - Speech to Catholic Healthcare Professionals and Gynecologists
